Location Scout Survey + Photos

Location Scout Survey
(attach location photos)

Project Name: The Boy in the Woods
Completed by: Emil Talic
Scout Date & Time: April 13, 2015

Location address: 24899 Fillmore Road

Day and time of shoot: Sunday

Location description (interior/ exterior):

The interior is the basement of a suburban house consisting of play area, w/ pool table, bar area, carpeting, and couches. The outside will consist of a wooded area and grass plains.

Describe the scene and action. How many people are on camera?

The interior scenes will be in the basement with a party going on in it. People will be partying, dancing, drinking at the bar, and playing pool. There will be 5 or so people involved as our actors.

How much space is needed?

We will need sufficient space to have our party scenes, space for the crew and the equipment, and a wooded area to have the body bag dragging scenes.

Will the action be shot from one or multiple locations?

The action will be shot from two locations, the basement of a home in which the party scenes will take place, as well as the “murder” scene. Then the outside location will be the woods where they will hide the body.

Is there off-screen space available?

Yes, there is plenty of space in the basement since the basement is fairly descent size to have the equipment set up. The outside locations in and near the woods has plenty of space as well.

What are the light levels and sources of light? How does this impact your scene?

The light levels in the basement are kind of low, since it is just residence. There are several lights in the basement’s ceiling. We will use additional light where needed in low light situations. We will also change the lighting color in editing as the warm tone will impact are scenes in a negative way. We want to have a dark and ominous feeling for the lighting as we will have some of those themes in the narrative. In the edit we will change the lighting to more cool tones to achieve the feeling for the theme we’re going for.

Are you recording sound? Are there any issues to be aware of?

Yes, we will record the actors carrying the body bag outside in the woods as they talk back and forth to each other. We will also be recording them in the basement part scenes. Some issues would be the outside scenes with dialog, as there is a lot of background noise we could pick up.

Is there any special equipment needed?

We will be using extra led lights for the low light scenes in the basement. We might also need the shotgun microphone and boom for the outdoor dialog.

Are there any concerns that need to be addressed about shooting at this location?

The home is in a rural area so there is plenty of room for shooting and we don’t need to worry about shooting on private property as they have no neighbors.

Music Video Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGghkjpNCQ8

In the beginning of the video there was good use of a close up shot on the radio while he was tuning it. I also think the panning to the left to his face was a nice smooth transition shot. I liked the shot that followed as well, the camera is behind him in the truck. I think these scenes work well in the beginning because they invite the viewer to be apart of the journey with the main character. The camera angles make it seem like I'm there with him in the truck. The hand-held camera through out the music video makes it seem like I'm a friend there with people. I think this video is trying to portait a kind of wildness and the scenery in the Mise-en-scene. The background is basically just nature and wild desert. Everything the actors are doing evokes a type of wildness. The kids are climbing dangerous rocks and a cowboy is spinning a lasso. The kids are punk rock kids, and punk is known to be a wild lifestyle. They are dress in ripped jeans, dyed hair, and piercings. The cowboy is also known to be wild in american culture since the wild west. There is also an interaction with male and female teenagers, and teenagers are known to be wild in culture. The hand-held shots add to that wild theme the video has, and the ending has some nice visually appealing mid shots.

Narrative

The story would be about a guy and girl dating in college, they have a great relationship until the secrets start to appear one by one. They enjoy having each other in the only class they have together, they enjoying eating lunch together, and every break they hang out. Gradually the girl is noticing something is wrong. When she is with her boyfriend she sees him on occasion quickly taking glimpses of a particular girl that passes by during their lunch hour. She brushes it off and doesn't think much of it. As the guy and girl keep dating and hanging out with each other, the guy is becoming increasingly distant. If the girl asks him if something is wrong he becomes attentive again and convincingly starts listening to the girl and starts talking about another topic. Eventually the girl is very suspicious and decides to look at his phone as she sees he seems to always keep it on his person where ever he is. One day the girl asks the guy to use his phone for various reasons through various times of the day. On each occasion he comes up with a very sly excuse. Her hypothesis is correct, he is definitely seems to be hiding something on his phone as she also noticed that they that his phone is password protected as well. One night she spends the night at his apartment, and as they are going to bed and he needs to use the bathroom badly so he forgets to bring it with him and leaves his phone on the night stand. The girlfriend doesn't know the password, although she is very clever and cleans the glass of her boyfriends phone to reveal the thumb swipes on his password. As the guy falls asleep she sees the way his thumb swiped and accesses his phone to find out she is being cheated on. The next morning the guy wakes up alone with his phone in a glass of water with a sticky note on the glass saying "Unlocked..."

Documentary

My documentary would be about the homeless life in South Bend. I would start out my documentary with a narrator and they would be stating facts about the homeless population of South Bend. The facts may be accompanied with some visuals like charts and background images. Then I would have filmed interviews of some of the homeless on the street. I would ask them a few questions, like how they ended up there, do they have family, how their daily lives are, and some detail of what they do on a daily basis. I would also do some filming of the homeless shelter, with other various rolling shots of homeless people. At the homeless shelter I would do a few interviews of the homeless living there and some of the workers there as well.

Music Video

The music video would be accompanied by a techno track. The techno track would give the feeling of of being hurried. This will add to the story of the music video because the story will involve a continuous chase scenes. An average man walking through downtown happens to find a suitcase sitting in an alley, curious he goes into the alley to check it out. He is curious enough to go up to it and open it and in it he finds that the suitcase is full of money. He immediately closes it and runs off with it, being seduced by the large amount. He gradually become paranoid as he is walking through downtown. Two men who were supposed to pick up the money for payment for unknown criminal activity. They gradually start to track down the man as they know downtown streets very well. The man runs into them and the chase begins into various chase scenes. The man runs into a few close calls with the two criminals during the chase and in the end he gets away...or does he?

Bio

Hi I am Emil Talic I am a junior at Indiana University South Bend. I am currently in the New Media with a Concentration in Graphic Design degree. I love many mediums of art and I definitely like working with digital art as well, using such programs as adobe Illustrator, Indesign, and Photoshop. I would say art is a big part of my life, I constantly pursue it and acknowledge it everyday. I am also a Christian man and I think after I achieve my degree I would definitely like to pursue expressing my faith through art publicly. I would do this through any media necessary to express the right message and aesthetic. I've always loved art, the aesthetic, the process, the medium whether digital or traditional. This is how I like to express myself and art is definitely a part of who I am as a person.
