Location Scout Survey + Photos

Location Scout Survey
(attach location photos)

Project Name: The Boy in the Woods
Completed by: Emil Talic
Scout Date & Time: April 13, 2015

Location address: 24899 Fillmore Road

Day and time of shoot: Sunday

Location description (interior/ exterior):

The interior is the basement of a suburban house consisting of play area, w/ pool table, bar area, carpeting, and couches. The outside will consist of a wooded area and grass plains.

Describe the scene and action. How many people are on camera?

The interior scenes will be in the basement with a party going on in it. People will be partying, dancing, drinking at the bar, and playing pool. There will be 5 or so people involved as our actors.

How much space is needed?

We will need sufficient space to have our party scenes, space for the crew and the equipment, and a wooded area to have the body bag dragging scenes.

Will the action be shot from one or multiple locations?

The action will be shot from two locations, the basement of a home in which the party scenes will take place, as well as the “murder” scene. Then the outside location will be the woods where they will hide the body.

Is there off-screen space available?

Yes, there is plenty of space in the basement since the basement is fairly descent size to have the equipment set up. The outside locations in and near the woods has plenty of space as well.

What are the light levels and sources of light? How does this impact your scene?

The light levels in the basement are kind of low, since it is just residence. There are several lights in the basement’s ceiling. We will use additional light where needed in low light situations. We will also change the lighting color in editing as the warm tone will impact are scenes in a negative way. We want to have a dark and ominous feeling for the lighting as we will have some of those themes in the narrative. In the edit we will change the lighting to more cool tones to achieve the feeling for the theme we’re going for.

Are you recording sound? Are there any issues to be aware of?

Yes, we will record the actors carrying the body bag outside in the woods as they talk back and forth to each other. We will also be recording them in the basement part scenes. Some issues would be the outside scenes with dialog, as there is a lot of background noise we could pick up.

Is there any special equipment needed?

We will be using extra led lights for the low light scenes in the basement. We might also need the shotgun microphone and boom for the outdoor dialog.

Are there any concerns that need to be addressed about shooting at this location?

The home is in a rural area so there is plenty of room for shooting and we don’t need to worry about shooting on private property as they have no neighbors.

Music Video Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGghkjpNCQ8

In the beginning of the video there was good use of a close up shot on the radio while he was tuning it. I also think the panning to the left to his face was a nice smooth transition shot. I liked the shot that followed as well, the camera is behind him in the truck. I think these scenes work well in the beginning because they invite the viewer to be apart of the journey with the main character. The camera angles make it seem like I'm there with him in the truck. The hand-held camera through out the music video makes it seem like I'm a friend there with people. I think this video is trying to portait a kind of wildness and the scenery in the Mise-en-scene. The background is basically just nature and wild desert. Everything the actors are doing evokes a type of wildness. The kids are climbing dangerous rocks and a cowboy is spinning a lasso. The kids are punk rock kids, and punk is known to be a wild lifestyle. They are dress in ripped jeans, dyed hair, and piercings. The cowboy is also known to be wild in american culture since the wild west. There is also an interaction with male and female teenagers, and teenagers are known to be wild in culture. The hand-held shots add to that wild theme the video has, and the ending has some nice visually appealing mid shots.
